Backing on to Reel
I have
read and listened to quite a few methods for putting the correct amount of
backing on to a reel.
These
methods include, doubling up the line and placing it on to the reel and using
string or twine to guesstimate the correct amount of backing.
The method
listed below is the one and only correct method to use.
No
guessing or marking the reel.
How to put the correct amount of backing on to a reel.
The
procedure is best done out of doors in a field or any other clear area.
Unspool
your fly line from its spool using a pencil or similar instrument through the
spool center as described on the line box or pamphlet and lay the line out straight on
the ground.
Tie the
tip (fishing end) of your fly line on to your reel. Any soft knot or tape will
do.
Wind your
line on to your reel until around a yard /
meter is left hanging.
If you
haven't joined your backing yet then this is a good point to do it.
Wind all
of your line and backing on to your reel so that about an eighth of an inch /
3mm gap is left between the backing and the reel crossovers.
Now cut
your backing at this point and take the lot back off.
Tie your
backing on to the reel using an overhand knot.
Wind your
backing and your line on to the reel.
What you
should now have is a reel with the correct amount of backing on it.
This
procedure is only done once when you buy a new line so it makes sense to do it
correctly.
